Jori Hulkkonen - Helsinki Mix Sessions - 29-Sep-07 12:00 PM
This is an excellent mix cd by Mr. Hulkkonen. It's well mixed and there's some absolutely great stuff on here. Moreover, it's rather difficult to pick tracks that are demonstrably better than others. Nevertheless, particular highlights for me include Atlantic Forest, From West To South, Coming 2 Get U, Granada and 2 Mora I Will Luv Ya. There are few vocals on this cd but it is extremely deep and surprisingly funky. As a result, I have no hesitation in recommending this cd.
Whilst I might not like everything about Jori's work, his productions are immensely varied and you could never pigeon-hole him. Jori has now gone down the Electro route somewhat but his tracks are still definitely worth checking.
Ron Trent - Sessions: Volume One - 27-Sep-07 09:26 AM
Once again, another outstanding cd from Ron Trent. Superbly deep, extremely soulful and impeccably mixed as one would expect.
There are so many fantastic songs/tracks on this cd (in fact many are Ron Trent productions). Particular highlights for me include tracks by Carl Hancock Rux, Blaze, Atlantis, Jody Watley, Nathan Haines, Erro and Jiva.
If you like this cd, then Ron Trent's Coast2Coast on NRK and Musical Reflections on R2 are also essential purchases.
Ron Trent - Coast 2 Coast - 27-Sep-07 09:11 AM
This is an outstanding compilation by Ron Trent and certainly one of the best deep house mixes released this year. Ron Trent and NRK have really excelled themselves.
As you would expect from Ron Trent, it is very well mixed, the tune selection is impecable and it's soulful/deep in all the right places.
It is very diffult to single out any songs/tracks that are demonstrably better than others as they're all excellent. Nonetheless, highlights for me in particular include Outphase, Cassio Ware, Roland Clark, Kimara Lovelace and Patrick Green.
If you like this cd, then you also need Ron Trent's Sessions: Volume One (Giant Step) in your collection. Moreover, you'll probably really like Karizma's Coast2Coast mix as well.
Various - GQ Presents Ibiza Chillout - 27-Sep-07 08:54 AM
I got this cd free with a GQ I bought about 8 years ago. To be honest, it's a bit of a strange cd to judge objectively.
Compiled by Guy Chambers who is most noted for his pop work with Robbie Williams (Millennium, Angels, No Regrets, Let Me Entertain You etc) but also for his production work with Kylie Minogue, Brian McFadden, Delta Goodrem, INXS, Natasha Bedingfield and Beverley McKnight.
Thus, one can see that he is unashamedly a pop producer. Yet he has produced an album that includes Jazzdance/Jazzy Deep House/Tech House and chillout! I wonder how much of a hand he had in compiling it?! If he did compile it, then kudos to him.
Some great tunes on here namely the Deep House/Breakbeat of Bluekey and Demusphere and the chillout of Won't Set Me Free by Alien Funk Love.
As a whole, it's not a bad compilation by GQ at all but it's far from essential. Nevertheless, it's certainly much better than the nondescript compilations that most mags of its ilk tend to put out.
However, this compilation could have been much better if Mr Chambers had chosen not to sequence/mix it. Very ill-advised indeed. For example, the mix between Window Shopping and Won't Set Me Free is so bad that it would make even so called dj's like Sonique and Boy George blush with absolute embarrassment!!
Therefore 2.5 out of 5 is a fair score for this cd.
Various - Garage City - 15-Sep-07 03:40 AM
This a good release by Defected. Nonetheless, Bobby & Steve's disco house mix is a bit airy fairy and lacks variety.
However, Spen's mix is excellent and has much more variety. It's soulful, deep and funky. Particular highlights include Joy to the World, Lights Out, Paradise (Cover of Change - Paradise), Block Party and Mi Destino.
Lots of tricks in the mix as well. To me it seems more effort has gone into Spen's mix. Overall, this compilation is recommended.
